Hi

I've got a dual core G5 power mac and a Sony k750i phone. What kind of range should I be expecting before the two stop talking to each other? The Bluetooth aerial on the back of my machine is facing a wall and, when I walk no more than 4 meters away from my base unit, the connection between the phone and computer is lost.

Would a 100m dongle fix this? If so, can anyone recommend a good one for the Mac.

Cheers

The range will depend on many different things. Material of the wall; radio environment (wireless phones; WLAN; and such things).

I have the same G5 setup, and get a surprisingly long range with some handheld devices. My office walls are thin plaster walls, however...

Best.

Ah, okay, thanks. It's the back wall of my apartment, so the signal isn't passing through anything to spread further "inwards". Looks like I might have to invest in a dongle if I can find a good Mac compatible one. Although it's not Bluetooth, I've got Airport/Airtunes working fine through the same machine with my stereo 3 rooms away.

Okay. As far as 3rd party dongles go, these says you have to be careful about a bug in Mac OS X 10.4.4 and 10.4.5 that renders a large number of such dongles (CSR, with old firmware) useless for anything that requires incoming connections. If possible, I'd wait for 10.4.6 to come out before purchasing anything, to see if that upgrade resolves the problems.

Best.

Thanks Jonas.

From what I've read, 10.4.6 isn't too far away, so I'll wait and see what happens. If nothing is forthcoming, I guess I could move my base unit about a bit and see if that helps.

Fantastic piece of software, by the way :)
