i added a contact to my phone (with an email address) this evening so that i
can come home, sync it to my mail client (entourage) and have it already in
my address book ready to be entered to the send line, when i open up a new
mail message window. after the sync was complete, i noticed the individual i
needed to email was not in my address book. i looked in the phone and saw
that it was still in the phone; i also noticed there were many contacts that had
been doubled.

i spent a while checking each of the doubled contacts; they each had the full
info for their respective contacts, so i proceeded to delete one of each that
was doubled, and resynced my phone.

when i looked at my (entourage) address book again, all of the doubled
contacts had been completely deleted. fortunately, they're still on my phone,
but now my entourage address book is all screwed up.

i did a software update, and decided to re-download isync, (which i had
trashed once i bought mobilesync), just to back up the contacts on my phone.
the contacts are now all on my apple address book which is almost useless to
me but at least i have them backed up; my phones' calendar however, which
was synced with my entourage calendar, is now blank.

no problem, i figured, since they're still in entourage. so i tried another sync,
this time confident that everything would be fine, since my contacts were
backed up, and my calendar was blank.

for the 2nd or 3rd time, mobile sync said, "semi slow synchronization, getting
all contacts from t68..." this takes a long while, then the status bar turns solid
blue, and 'finishes' and the 'review changes' window appears. in the 'add'
column, nothing, in the 'remove' column, 32 items, and in 'modify', 25.

why is the phone deleting contacts from the entourage address book, and not
adding contacts that i know are new in there and need to be added?

like i said before, when i deleted contacts on my phone, it was because they
were doubled, there was still another one in the phone with all the
information. a few of them that were doubled were ones that i had a voice
profile for, and the copy did not have the voice profile, so naturally, that was
the one i deleted, yet, still, in entourage, all gone. sorry if i'm being redundant.

when i unchecked 'sync contacts' and resynced with just, 'sync calendar', the
'review changes' window showed only removals from my entourage calendar.
why is the phone only overriding and deleting from entourage and not
syncing? i was about to lose all my calendar information!!

even though isync is pretty useless to me, i did like how it asked what
overrides what, or if the information was merely to "merge".

i love mobilesync, it does for me, what i need, to sync my entourage stuff,
which is what i mainly use, but i do wish it would also sync my notes and tasks
since both entourage, and my t68i have these, though i'm sure the phone
couldn't handle all that my entourage notes contain; but i'd gladly buy a
higher capacity sim card if that's possible, to be able to do that.

as for mobile sync in its current incarnation, i wish that, when the review
changes window appeared, it would list the items pending change, so that i
could check and uncheck, whether to perform the change; as it is now, i'm
clueless as to what's being deleted or modified or added. had i not noticed the
changes made tonight, by chance, i would have had lost many important
contacts. i am still stumped, and hoping that someone out there will know why
this has happened, and maybe jonas can read this and try to improve his
already great product.

fortunately, the contacts, but no calendar stuff, are still on my phone, and the
calendar stuff, still in entourage, but i have to be careful what i do or i risk
losing valuable information, what do i do now? thanks

mykl

Hi,

That's a very long description... Let me try and summarize:

1. You ended up getting duplicates in your phone.
2. You removed the duplicates
3. Upon synchronization, the records were removed in Entourage
4. Now you're wondering what to do.

(Let me know if I'm substantially incorrect here)

Unfortunately, it's not possible to know why the duplicates appeared. I
recommend synchronizing often, so that MobileSync doesn't have to
perform the slow (and somewhat less exact) synchronization routine.

So, let focus on what to do now. Here's my advice:

1. Make sure you don't have any duplicates in your phone or Entourage.
2. Clear out MobileSync's database by holding ctrl and option when you
click "Synchronize" (a panel will ask you if you really want to do this)
3. At this point, MobileSync will merge the two databases, and you
should have few, if any duplicates after this. (This step will not
remove any records at all, just add, if necessary).

Hopefully, after this, you'll be back of track.

Best,
Jonas

PS. I'll be out of the office from June 16 to June 29, so try and help
each other out, ok? I'll try to check email every now and again, though.
