Okay. Could you please check the Java certificate store in the Security menu of your phone? Do they have Thawte and/or Verisign in there?

I know Cingular has blocked Bluetooth access (as specced in the JAD file) on other phone brands. Until now at least, this was not the case on Sony Ericsson phones. but the W580i is new, and it's possible that AT&T has tightened it up, in which case you'd be out of luck.
Looks like this is the case- Cingular has blocked Bluetooth access in the w580i.

The phone comes with a remote control feature (much like Clicker but not nearly as good), but I can't get it to work and there's no documentation to support it.

I'd love to know if someone finds a way around Cingular's block.

I wasn't able to get the remote to work either until I upgraded to the Leopard operating system on my mac. But since the upgrade it works.

I am having the same issue with the w580i. I even called cingular/att and they claimed it was a limitation Sony put on the phone; although, I don't think this individual knew what he was talking about. Either way, I would love it if anyone has found a solution to this problem. How would unlocking my phone and or "flashing?" the phone effect the java limitations?

Also, can you get the built in clicker to work with itunes for switching songs, volume etc?

Any help would be awesome. It seems cancel.man and I are having the exact same problem.

Flashing the phone with "generic" firmware should help, but there's no legit way of doing so, that I'm aware of.

The limitation would have been put on the phone by SE at AT&T's request. That's how these things work.

Best.
