When i sync my phone, after having altered my favourites playlist in iTunes, and then connect and disconnect my phone from the computer, i go through the playlists and see that the songs (which i had manually entered in the "Data Transfer" mode) had remained, and those SAME songs which are now in my favourites have been duplicated onto the phone.

From my understanding, syncing should only UPDATE what is/is not on the phone already, and thus not creating any duplicates of the same song. Am i the only one to have encountered this problem?

Thank you

The software does not touch pre-existing content. As a result, we don't re-associate pre-existing content with what's in iTunes.

Do get rid of the old (manually copied) tracks, click Summary -> Browse. Then delete the all tracks.

Best.
